Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa (Subclass 491)
A 5-year provisional visa supporting regional growth - with the largest points bonus on the skilled program and a clear pathway to permanent residency.
What the Subclass 491 offers
The Subclass 491 is a 5-year provisional visa designed to spread skilled migration into designated regional areas of Australia. Applicants must be either sponsored by an eligible family member living in a regional area, or nominated by a participating regional state or territory government.
It carries an automatic +15 bonus points on the SkillSelect points test - the highest single boost available across the skilled program - often the difference between an EOI that sits and one that receives an Invitation to Apply.
Subclass 491 holders must live, work and study in a designated regional area for the visa duration. After 3 years of demonstrated regional living and a minimum income threshold, holders can transition to the Subclass 191 Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) visa - a direct, structured pathway to permanent residency.
